Kellogg Company Elects W.K. Kellogg Foundation CEO Sterling Speirn to Board

BATTLE CREEK, Mich., Feb. 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Kellogg Company announced today the election of Sterling Speirn, president and CEO of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, to its board of directors. Speirn took the helm of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation in January 2006 and was formerly president and CEO of Peninsula Community Foundation.

Speirn spent 15 years at the Peninsula Community Foundation where he launched the Center for Venture Philanthropy. He is past chair of the board of directors of Northern California Grantmakers and served on the Advisory Council of the Global Philanthropy Forum. Speirn is co-creator and former board member of the Raising A Reader take-home book bag program, which earned a Fast Company Social Entrepreneurship Award for 2006.

Previously, Speirn taught at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, and has been a guest lecturer at University of California at Berkeley's Haas School of Business, Harvard Business School, University of Santa Clara, University of San Francisco and the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.

Before joining Peninsula Community Foundation in 1990, Speirn managed the national computer grants program for nonprofit organizations at Apple Computer. He also has worked for the U.S. Department of the Interior in Washington, D.C.; practiced law in North Carolina; taught English and Literature to 7th and 8th graders in Cleveland, Ohio and managed a large community health center in Arcata, California. He holds a degree in political science from Stanford University and a law degree from the University of Michigan.
