BATTLE CREEK, Mich., May 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- How much fiber do you really need each day -- 10 grams? 20 grams? A new survey commissioned by Kellogg's® All-Bran® Yogurt Bites cereal finds that nearly 70 percent of women polled say they get enough fiber every day, but research shows only one in 10 actually eats enough fiber(1).

Getting enough daily fiber is vital to a woman's health, and most women should be eating about 25 grams per day. Not only does fiber promote regularity but it can help reduce the risk of such ailments as coronary artery disease, colon cancer, obesity, diabetes and various gastro-intestinal disorders.

The telephone survey of 1,010 adults, conducted in February by Opinion Research Corporation, found that consumers are significantly underestimating how much fiber they need, with more than one-third saying they needed fewer than 20 grams of fiber each day. At the same time, most women respondents (90 percent) were able to identify foods that are good sources of fiber, including whole grains, and another 91 percent knew the primary health benefits of a diet high in fiber. So why don't women eat enough fiber containing foods?

"The All-Bran Yogurt Bites survey tells me that while women are very aware of the benefits of fiber and the food sources in which to find it, they are acutely underestimating the health benefits of fiber," says registered dietitian Joanne Larsen. "Awareness is key to ensuring women know which food choices pack the most fiber per serving so they can try to reach their goal of 25 grams per day."

Incorporating All-Bran Yogurt Bites cereal into a woman's diet is a simple and great-tasting way to start the day off with nearly 40 percent of the daily recommended intake of fiber in one bowl. With 10 grams of fiber per serving, and a delicious combination of whole grains and yogurt-covered oat clusters, All-Bran Yogurt Bites surpasses many other breakfast foods like bagels, toast and muffins in taste and fiber content. At 230 calories per serving (one and a quarter cups of cereal with one half cup of fat free milk), the cereal offers a terrific way to jumpstart the day with fiber.

With 10 grams of fiber in a serving, All-Bran Yogurt Bites cereal provides at least 3 times the fiber of the leading fiber supplement.(2) Additionally, while supplements can contain up to three grams of fiber per serving, they lack in taste and may not offer other vitamins and minerals. According to focus group research, many physicians and registered dietitians agree it's better to get fiber through real food sources.

Larsen urges women to do a reality check on their fiber intake and look for ways to increase fiber to a healthy amount. All-Bran cereal offers an interactive Daily Fiber Tabulator where women can learn if their fiber intake is in-check at http://www.all-bran.com/.
